Remesha Drums is a percussion ensemble originally from Burundi, now based in Ottawa since 2001. The members of Remesha drums have been playing Ingoma (Drums) since they were young boys. Traditionally drummers like Remesha are a part of ceremonies such as birth, Umuganuro (sorghum harvest) and coronation of the Mwami (Kings). The drums are made from hollowed tree trunks Umuvungangoma covered with cow's skins. Drums called Karyenda are sacred in Burundi, and represent the Mwami fertility and regeneration. In addition to the central drum called inkiranya, there are Amashako drums which provide a continuous beat, and Ibishikizo drums, which follow the rhythm established by the inkiranya. The members of the ensemble take turns playing the Inkiranya, dancing, resting, and playing the other drums, rotating throughout the show without interruptions. At the start of their performance, the drummers enter balancing the heavy drums on their heads while singing and playing. There are some extra members who carry ornamental spears and shields and lead the procession with their dance. They then perform a series of rhythms, some accompanied by song, and exit the stage the same way, carrying the drums on their heads and playing. While they are drumming, Remesha drummers are spiritually animated by the sacred drum and the sound coming out of it. The drums feed the souls of the drummers and the drummers feed the souls of many to create a communion of the three. Drum, drummers and listeners. Such is the power that Remesha drums bring with them everywhere they go. Remesha drums also plan to teach the children of other cultures how to drum.

Nadine
grew up in a musical family, her father an avid guitar player with a huge passion for Jazz and Blues. From a young age, Nadine was exposed to that music daily. Within her, grew a love for the old school musical stylings, from the Roaring Twenties to the late 50s - the Broadway musicals, the clothing, the movies and especially the Jazz. Some of her favourite artists are Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Marilyn Monroe and Liza Minelli. Singing is her biggest passion among drawing and painting. She has been performing in numerous venues for the last 4 years. Her goal is to give everyone the chance to time travel in a moment of a song.

Mic Check

http://www.myspace.com/miccheck819

Born in Brussels, Belgium, and of African origin, Mic Check moved to Ottawa in the early 90’s.  While Hip Hop/Rap was dominating the US charts, France was clearly introducing new French Hip Hop/Rap artists to the world.  Mic Check developed a love for urban music. It is while listening without prejudices to the English-speaking and French-speaking rap that he developed his own talent.  While evolving in a bilingual environment dominated by the English, he realized that he must break through the linguistic and social barriers.  For Mic Check music is a universal language that is mastered with fineness.  This fine mastery of rhythm texts has a tendency to surprise the listeners, as much by his energetic flow than by the eloquent words. Mic Check’s ease with the microphone opened the doors to several transmissions of radio air time, as much in Ottawa as Montreal.  Mic Check has often had to give retorts to various local rappers at the time of improvised sessions of ''freestyle'' in the broadcast  transmission of French-speaking rap rhythmic Rupture on the waves of CHUO 89.1 FM in 1995 to 2000.  All recently, the démo of his single ‘The Time Changed’ even was broadcasted on the waves of HOT 89.9 FM, the popular English-speaking Ottawa radio station.

Best described as an acoustic indie rock duo featuring Amber Morais on vocals and Sarah Cooper on guitar.  The music is new, edgy, melodic, lyrical and choked with emotion.

Amber Morais

As a child I was always singing my heart out!  My parents were aware of my passion for music and enrolled me in music lessons.  Over the years I have been sincerely blessed fulfilling many goals and have become a very versatile performer singing a wide range of styles such as Opera, Gospel, folk, Rock n’ Roll, Rhythm & Blues, and sultry jazz.  I have performed “Jazz by Amber Lee” for the past four years and have decided to try something fresh and NEW!

Sarah Cooper

Music has always played a major part in my life.  When I was 14 I picked up an acoustic guitar that my mother had as a gift from my father.  She played it every now and then but it mostly just sat in the corner like a lonely piece of furniture until my friend showed me how to play one song.  That’s where it all began.  I was hooked.  Completely self taught, I would play in my room for hours and now the rest is history!

Dube_Brothers_-_Rise_Up_For_Haiti.jpgThe Dube Brothers are made up of Liam on lead guitar (13), Jan on bass/vocals (11), and Quinn on drums/vocals (9). They got their start in music when they began making music videos on posting them on YouTube to cheer up their bedridden mother, Michele, who was fighting breast cancer. They were 7, 9, and 11 at the time. Often these videos were of some of her favourite songs. Shortly after their mother's passing in the summer of 2008, their grandmother booked them for a cancer fundraiser. Since then they played to raise funds for a cause that is obviously close to their hearts.

After the earthquake in Haiti however, it became clear that there was another cause just as close, for which they had a great understanding; orphans who had lost their parents. In the months that ensued, with the support of stepmom and dad (Christine & Rob), the boys embarked on a rigorous campaign to develop a professional performance worthy of a stage, the cause they were supporting, and requests for funds on behalf of the House of Hope orphanage and Grace Children's Hospital in Haiti via Canadian Feed the Children. Since then they have helped raise over $43,000 and they continue to move ahead in meeting their $50K target. They have been featured in the news on several occasions, championing their cause, and calling kids of all ages to get involved in any way they can. All the while, they continue to play additional shows to raise money for additional cancer and orphaned children causes. They are now working on their own compositions and preparing to hit the recording studio. On July 3, at 6pm, they are playing the "Rise up for Haiti" event at Shenkman Arts Centre along with a list of artists in order to continue their commitment to raising funds for Haiti.

Shaman Rhythms, formerly known as Soul Journey, is an exceptional Ottawa based group combining nouveau Spanish guitar with Latin percussion, creating an exquisite blend of Latin rhythms and world music with contemporary influences. They play a captivating collection of both traditional and original compositions blending Latin, Blues, Flamenco, and other world music. The group members originally come from Mexico and Central America.

The group members met in 2007 when they shared the stage at the National Archives.  Discovering that they shared a commonality of views – to heal through music and help communities struggling to survive – they decided to make music together, sharing their musical influences and skills to create their unique blend of Latin fusion.

"El Jaguar" on lead guitar is originally from Guatemala, and has been playing both Latin Percussion and guitar from an early age. He was deeply influenced by the Flamenco styles of Paco de Lucia, Jerónimo Maya, and Bireli Lagrene, who is known for his gypsy jazz. He plays a fast and furious Latin influenced guitar rhapsody in a way that is utterly spell-binding.

Raymundo Pizana, originally from Mexico, is a seasoned professional on guitar and bass. He was influenced by Rock and also explored Flamenco styles and World Beats. While playing with a band in Mexico, Raymundo was discovered by a Canadian entrepreneur and was invited to continue his musical career in Canada where he has since played with various Latin and Rock bands. Salomon Carrillo on Latin percussion is from El Salvador. His musical style was created through a variety of music, including Rock, Andean, Afro-Cuban and World Beat. He is an innovative and eclectic performer exploring many different kinds of traditional and modern instruments. He has toured with numerous groups performing in Europe, throughout Central America, the USA and Canada.

The group has performed throughout Ottawa for numerous fundraising events, at the National Art Gallery and National Archives, various cafes and clubs, and for corporate and private parties and weddings. They have also performed at various music festivals in Ontario and Quebec. Together they bring out the spirit of music as they magnetize the crowds with each performance. Shaman Rhythms will capture your heart and send it dancing to enchanting and uplifting rhythms. Their musical arrangements shine and will make you want to dance!

Shaman Rhythms will be performing with guest guitarist and composer, Evandro Gracelli.  Evandro was born in Brazil, and recently moved to Ottawa. He started playing guitar when he was quite young, and has studied with Julinho Marques, Ulisses Rocha, Chriso Rocha, Wilson Lopes, Alberto Trindade and Nelson Faria. He received his music degree from the University of Campinas in São Paulo-Brazil, and teaches guitar, advanced harmony, rhythm, composition and improvisation.  He has performed with Alta Fidelidade, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Aline Muniz, Carlos Navas, Banda Cara de Pau, Leandro Bomfim, Luciana Mello, Péri, Rosie Brown and many, many others.  It’s a true joy and privilege to perform with Evandro.

ApocalypsticAPOCA_COLLAGE.jpg

www.youtube.com/apocalypsticmusic

An explosion of sick beats, riffs, and synth - this band takes pop and shoves it in your face. Priding themselves on the heart felt sophistication of their lyrics and the up beat musicality, during live shows these girls are witty, sincere, and genuine. Vocally influenced by new school RnB and Pop, Drea takes her voice to different heights from show to show always refining the songs and switching up the melodies to keep things spicy like the latina she is. Laurie's dexterity and versitility as a musician/lyricist has turned heads since her childhood. Rock, Pop, Hip-hop, you name it, Laurie works hard to make it work. Songs change gear in mid duration from one genre to another. Her rhythmic instincts lock the foundation of the band's live shows. Apocalypstic's message has always been: always be yourself no matter what, and its okay to be passionate. Having been branded many things, the truth is there's no room for drama with BFF's this tight.... ♥ It's about the music and our fans.

The band is an amalgam of styles, opinions, and personalities spanning the whole spectrum of possibility. From the synth-pop-rock best-friend-break-up ballad ‘Goodbye Girl’ to the rock-reggae ‘Shut Down’ to newer tracks like ‘Oh I’ ,'The Truth', and 'Endless Options' will have you rocking out start to finish. A love for playing live music brought the members together in 2006. A twist of fate had them join musical forces in 2007. A drive to make music had the band write a record in 2008. A small surplus of cash saw them through the making of this record in 2009. That’s the official timeline anyway; there were on-screen appearances in indie flicks, wicked fun gigs and personal turmoil in between, but nothing noteworthy here. They write and make music for themselves. It’s simple: if they wouldn’t listen to it, they won’t play it.
